2008 – Kent State Geological Society
Mineral/Fossil sales table at the Spring Kent Business &
Community Expo. Sales personnel include Karen Smith, our
departmental Secretary for the last 25 years, and Mike Reynolds, KSGS
Vice-President for 2007-08. Due to their effort, supplemented by
that of several faculty members, about 3 hours at this Expo generated
$104 for KSGS, the Department’s undergraduate club which has been
in existence since 1949 (almost 60 years!!). By selling
refreshments, minerals, fossils, and tee shirts, etc. 3 days/week in
McGilvrey Hall, KSGS supports it’s activities which include raising
$1000-2000 annually for Summer Field Camp scholarships awarded to
geology majors. Additionally, the club continues to be a major
player in the annual Fall Picnic and Spring Banquet social
events.

there and the one who inspired her to become a geologist. Bob is
retired and still living in Granville, OH while Melissa is an
Environmental Geologist with Burgess & Niple in Akron.

2007 – Akin Balogun and Dick
Heimlich outside Memorial Gym following the May graduation ceremony at
which Akin received the M.S. degree. Akin came to KSU from
Nigeria with a strong commitment to petroleum geology and an excellent
supportive course background which was expanded further in our
program. In Nigeria, he received a Shell Development Co.
Academic Recognition award and, while at KSU, he was voted
Outstanding M.S. student, received one of our Amoco Alumni
Research Grants, and a major Geological Society of America
Research Grant. Under Joe Ortiz, his thesis advisor,
Akin conducted research involving the application of Diffused Spectral
Reflectance to determine high-resolution lithostratigraphy in the Rose
Run Formation of eastern Ohio. After a summer internship in
hydrocarbon well-logging in Oklahoma with Geosearch Logging
(President, Joe Struckel, KSU B.S. 1969), Akin presented
his M.S. research at the AAPG Eastern Section Meeting where he was
interviewed by four petroleum firms. In April he accepted on
offer from Occidental Oil & Gas Corp., and he is now a Geologist in
the firm’s Houston office.

Mine, Sudirman Mountains, Indonesia. Pit diameter is 1.3 miles, making
it the third largest open pit mine in the world. Together, the open pit
and underground components place this as the largest gold mine and the
third largest copper mine in the world. By-products here include silver
and zinc. Among his worldwide minerals-exploration consulting
ventures, Paul has done mapping and geotechnical work in the
underground portion of this mine and may be returning later in
2008. Although located at the equator, snow lies on the distant

at Kandahar Airport in Afghanistan. An Army reservist,
Jason has spent 13 months in Afghanistan and Iraq during two tours of

delayed his graduation date, he managed to complete the
B.S.degree in 2004 and is about to be promoted to First
Lieutenant (classified as an engineer officer). Interested
in a career in engineering geology, Jason is currently employed
at J & L Laboratories in Wadsworth, OH where his duties
include engineering soil testing in the lab as well as field work
involving site evaluation and drilling-program design, among
