The Ambitions of a Dictator Thwarted |
| The Iraq Survey Group (ISG), a group charged with the task of investigating the existence of WMD in Iraq, released its final report to Congress, stating there was no evidence of any stockpiles. However, the report revealed that Sadaam Hussein had never abandoned his intent to develop nuclear weapons, so the offensive on Iraq put a stop to the dictator’s ambitions. |
| The results of the final report coincided with the ISG's “Interim Progress Report” and the views expressed by David Kay, former head of the ISG, at a public congressional hearing. U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has also already stated, “It turned out that we have not found any stockpiles (of weapons of mass destruction). I think it is unlikely that we will find any stockpiles.”The ISG was charged with the impossible task of scouring the Iraqi desert regions in an attempt to uncover chemical weapons, which have the potential to decimate an entire nation even with just a small amount. |
| Even though no WMD were discovered, the report concluded that Sadaam Hussein had full intentions of reinitiating his weapons program the moment sanctions, which started from the Gulf War, were lifted. |
| After the Gulf War in 1991, Hussein dismantled his nuclear weapons program, but nuclear weapons specialists were kept on hand, and Hussein possessed technology to manufacture nerve gases. Mahdi Obeidi, chief of nuclear development for the Sadaam regime, confirmed the preservation of this nuclear technology and concurred that Iraq’s nuclear weapons program could have been reinitiated “at the snap of Saddam Hussein’s fingers”. |
| Even now, it is necessary to prevent the flow of Iraqi nuclear scientists and technology into neighboring countries or terrorist organizations. Due to suspicions of nuclear technology being carried out of the Soviet Union and into Iran or North Korea in the past, there is a need to establish laws regulating the outflow of any nuclear scientists or technologies. |
