About Kahoot!
What is Kahoot!
Kahoot!
is a game-based learning platform, used as educational. Its learning games, "Kahoots",
are user-generated multiple-choice quizzes that can be accessed via a web browser
or the Kahoot app.
Kahoot!
can be used to review students' knowledge, for formative assessment, or as a
break from traditional classroom activities. The Kahoot! Site also includes
trivia quizzes. [From Wikipedia]
What does it cost?
The basic, free plan:
Kahoot! says, “… it’s our
commitment to keep Kahoot! free for … higher education teachers. .. As a
teacher, you can use Kahoot! for free - and so can your students. [https://support.kahoot.com/hc/en-us/articles/360008246494-Plans-and-billing-options-for-schools#basic ]
The Basic
plan allows you to:
- Add quiz and true/false questions.
- Import kahoot questions from a spreadsheet or our question bank.
- View basic web-hosted endgame reports.
- Download game reports as an Excel spreadsheet.
- Create kahoots faster with "fill-in-the-blank" templates
(some include Pro, Premium, or Premium+ features).
- For higher ed, host up to 50 in live games or challenges.
NOTE: There are more advanced, fee-based plans.
Kahoot! Pro allows you to host up to 200
players, gives access to more question types, and includes distance learning
features for $10/month, billed annually. See plans at https://kahoot.com/register/pricing-higher-ed/.
What Can I Use It For?
- Make lectures interactive - Combine quiz, polls, word cloud and other question types with slides to instruct in a more engaging way remotely or in class.
- Pre-assess knowledge
- Before you start a topic or course, host a game to assess current
level of knowledge, identify gaps and adjust your plan accordingly.
- Review content and prepare for tests - Recap on the most important content and make test prep less stressful for your students.
- Break the ice and spark discussion - Lighten up the mood and lower the threshold for asking questions even when instructing remotely.
- Gauge student opinions - Use polls and word cloud questions to collect opinions and encourage reluctant students to have a say.

What Type of Class Can I Use It For?
You can use Kahoot! for in-person classes, where the quiz is viewed on the screen in the classroom (and perhaps also live streamed), for synchronous remote classes, where students see the quiz in the remote classroom (e.g., Collaborate Ultra or Zoom), AND they can be used asynchronously, where students take the quiz on their own during a set time period (called a
challenge game; see https://kahoot.com/blog/2020/02/06/what-is-student-paced-challenge/
and a video at https://youtu.be/_nNvkjp28LQ
[2:05]).
Getting Started
You will need to set up a Kahoot! Account and User Profile.
1.
You can get started at kahoot.com by clicking “Sign up” in
the top-right of the screen, or in the iOS/Android app by tapping the
profile icon in the top-left of the Discover page and then “Sign
up” at the bottom of the profile page.
2. You will be asked to choose your account type. Select Teacher.
3. For workplace, select Higher Education.
4. You can sign up in various ways, I suggest using your email.
5. Based on your account type of Teacher, you’ll need to provide some specific information.
6. Once you’ve
clicked "Join Kahoot!", you’ll need to choose a plan
option. If you have 50 students or less, you can choose the FREE
Kahoot! Basic plan.
- Currently, the Basic plan allows you to:
- Create and share games.
- Add quiz and true/false questions.
- Import kahoot questions from a spreadsheet or our question bank.
- View basic web-hosted endgame reports.
- Download game reports as an Excel spreadsheet.
- Create kahoots faster with "fill-in-the-blank" templates (some include Pro, Premium, or Premium+ features).
- For higher ed, host up to 50 students in live games or in challenges.
The Basic Concept
You will create a quiz (or use one of the hundreds in the kahoot bank).
The quiz can be shared to students in two ways:
1. Students can see the quiz in real time
(on the projector screen in an in-person class, or in a Collaborate or
Zoom room for a synchronous remote class) and answer the quiz on a
separate device or screen (in real time).
a.
That is, they will respond to what you are showing them (on the
projector screen or on a computer screen) using a Smartphone, Tablet,
or, if they are computer savvy from another tab on their
computer. (see https://youtu.be/yCakppkF_kA ).
2. Students can answer the quiz asynchronously in a Challenge quiz.
a. You will create the quiz, choose to make it a Challenge quiz, and get a link to the quiz.
b.
You will then send that link to students and they will answer the quiz
on their own device anytime before the deadline which you have set.
i.
In this mode, they see both the question and the answers on their
device. (see https://youtu.be/iXou8el3-mw )
Creating a Kahoot! (see a video walk-through at https://video.kent.edu/media/t/1_hch2oikb or a summary video at https://youtu.be/KJgZZQcsSPk )
1. Go to kahoot.com
2. Click “Log in” to get to your account.
3. Click on Kahoots at the top of the page.
4. Click on “Create New.”
5.
Choose your type of Kahoot. Those with a “crown” icon
are not available with this plan. I suggest just clicking on:
a) “New kahoot -- Create..”
6. At the top of the page, Enter the title of your quiz (“Enter kahoot title…”).
a) Optionally, enter a description.
b) The other options should be okay as is but be sure that Visibility is set to Everyone.
c) Click Done.
7. You are back at the create question page.
a)
The default page allows you to create a multiple-choice question or to
add one from the Kahoot Question Bank.
i.
With the basic account, you can also create True/False questions.
b)
Enter your question wording at the top of the page where it says,
“Click to start typing your question.”
c) For multiple choice you need at least two answers, and you can have up to four.
d) Enter the Answers and click on the circle next to the correct answer.
i.
Note you can click “answer options” to allow for more than
one right answer.
e)
Other options on this question page allow you to set the time limit for
the question (click on the 20 sec button and choose from 5 to 240
seconds), to choose the number of points the question is worth (0,
1000, 2000), and to add an image or YouTube video to the question.
f)
When you are ready, you can “Add question” to create a new
one (either multiple choice or True/False).
g) When you are all set, you can Preview the exam to see how it will look to students.
h) You can then either edit the questions or click on Done to end the creation session.
i. If Kahoot finds any problems you will
have a chance to correct them.
8. Your kahoot is now ready.
a) You can Test the quiz, play it now, or share it with others.
i. “Test the kahoot” shows you a
split screen with the “instructor’s screen” and a
player’s screen (shown as a smartphone).
1.
In the instructor screen you can choose from a variety of options that
will affect how the kahoot is played (e.g., if you want students to
enter their name, turn the Friendly nickname generator off; you
can change the music that plays in the “lobby”; randomize
the question or answer order, etc.)
2. You can choose Classic or Team mode. Choose classic mode for player vs. player mode.
3. Kahoot! generates a Game PIN. Enter that on the Smartphone.
4.
Choose a nickname; it appears on the instructor’s screen, along
with the number of players (only 1 in this case).
5. As the instructor, click start.
6. Watch to see what the student’s Smartphone sees.
7. Choose an answer and see if you got it right or wrong.
8.
On the instructor’s screen, how many people have given each
answer. Click on Next when all answers are in (or time has run
out). See the current rankings and click on Next.
9. The next question is offered up to the student device.
10. When the quiz is over you will see the top three winners (there is only one in this sample mode).
b) Click “Play now” to activate a quiz either in real time or for an asynchronous class.
i. For in-person class or a synchronous remote class:
1.
If you are in an in-person class or synchronous remote you will likely
choose “Teach” to have the class play a live game.
2. Click on “Teach,” set any options that you want, then click on “Classic.”
3.
Kahoot! takes you to a lobby (where the music plays) and provides
instructions to the students who see them in real time.
a.
Students either join the game at www.kahoot.it by using another device
(or another browser window on their computer and adjusting the screens
so that both can be seen) or by using a Kahoot! app (which they would
have previously set up).
4. When all players have joined, click on Start.
5.
Students see the quiz on the class screen (in-person projector;
Collaborate or Zoom classroom screen) and answer on the
“other” device.
6. Students see their place on their device and the top three on your screen.
ii.
For an asynchronous class (set up a "student-paced challenge):
1.
Choose “Assign” to allow students to take the quiz anytime
before a deadline that you set.
2.
You can then set the Date and Time by which students need to complete
the quiz and choose to use the question timer (or not), to Randomize
the answer order, and to use a Nickname generator or have them enter
their own name).
3. When all options are good, click on Create.
4.
Kahoot! will create a URL and a game PIN. You will then send the
URL to students so they can access the quiz.
5.
Students will click on the URL, be taken to the quiz, enter their name,
and take the quiz on their device before the deadline which you have
created.
(see https://youtu.be/iXou8el3-mw for an example)
c) If you have course
collaborators or colleagues you are working with click “Share it
with Others” and send it to them.
9.
There are several Reports available. Click on Reports at the top
of the Kahoot! Home screen and click on the quiz for details.
a)
To view details, after choosing the quiz you want to see, click on
Report Options at the top of the page next to the Quiz Name. You
can Download the report, print it, view other reports or view the
kahoot itself.
b) Or, move from the Summary view to the Players tab to see the results.
c) There are more options to explore.
