The 2009 Masters

International Business

Experience

May 16 to May 30, 2009 (Travel Dates)

The Program

Masters students enroll in a 3 credit hour graduate level course which can be used to fulfill the International Business Elective Requirement. The International Business Experience (IBE) occurs at the end of May, after the Spring semester and before the start of Summer I.

During the Spring semester, students attend several class sessions which deal with orientation to the trip, and discuss the countries and organizations which will be visited.

During the trip, time is scheduled for "open travel," typically after the first week in Geneva, Switzerland.

Each year the International Business Experience involves different venues.  In past years, the Geneva portion of the IBE has included visits with the International Red Cross, the International Labor Office, the World Trade Organization, the International Trade Center, Proctor & Gamble, Nestle Corp., and the Swiss Exchange, the World Intellectual Properties Organization, as well as visits to Chillion Castle and the United Nations.  In France, the Paris site visits have included IBM France, AXA, and the U.S. Embassy.  Cultural visits were made to the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, and the Palace of Versailles.  Finally, students travel to Strasbourg, France where visits have included the European Parliament and Timken (in Colmar).  The schedule for the upcoming IBE is currently under development.

Faculty
Dr. Lawrence J. Marks, Associate Professor of Marketing, will act as "host" and instructor for the IBE.

Housing
In Geneva, students stay in single or double occupancy rooms at the John Knox Center (depending on availability).  The Center was established in 1955 as an international student center.  The Center is located in quiet surroundings but close to the principal international organizations (Non Governmental Organization's, United Nations, WHO, ILO).

In other cities, arrangements are made for double occupancy rooms in local hotels.

Costs
The 2009 IBE travel fee is $2400.  In addition, there is the cost of graduate tuition for the 3 credit hour course.  The travel  fee covers lodging, some meals, ground transportation in Europe, and medical insurance.  Students purchase their own airline tickets.  A payment plan is available and partial scholarships may be possible. Students should budget at least  $500 for additional meals and local transportation.  They are responsible for passport fees and spending money.

Eligibility
Students must be regularly enrolled or acceptable transient students of the KSU Graduate School of Management.
