Subject/Topic: The Negative Effects of Smoking on Health
Objectives: The student will be able to name and discuss the health hazards of smoking and will be able to describe the physical feelings of someone who has smoking-induced emphysema.
Instructional Strategy: The teacher will ask the students if they know some dangers of smoking. He/she will discuss with the students problems such as high blood pressure, lung cancer, premature wrinkling of the skin, emphysema, etc. The students will be asked to breathe through a straw for two minutes in order to feel the effects of smoking on the lungs.
Materials: plastic straws
pictures of smokers’ lungs vs. nonsmokers’ lungs
paper/pencils to list effects of smoking
Evaluation: Prior to the lesson, ask students to talk about what they already know about smoking. After the lesson, ask them to pretend they are trying to convince a family member to quit smoking. The students should be able to site reasons mentioned in the lessons as well as mention the straw experiment.
