Benefits include no or low cost and large support communities for peer-based collaboration and sharing.
Freeware is software that is available for use at no cost, but the author still retains the copyright.
Portable applications are small and lightweight programs for use on removable drives, such as USB flash drives, with the ability to run on a variety of computers without installation. These applications are usually open source or freeware.
