Introduction

The purpose of this webquest is to introduce new weather vocabulary words to students in a fun and engaging way. The students search for the vocabulary terms, take a quiz, and present a presentation.

Learners

Grade: 4

Subject: Language Arts

Students have to know how to use technology in the classroom such as a computer.

Curriculum Standards

The standard is the acquisition of vocabulary. Students are expected to use context clues and text structures to figure out meaning of new words. Students must apply their knowledge for further use and will be expected to use a variety of resources.

Language Arts Standards Addressed

  • Determine the meaning of new words through context clues.
  • Apply knowledge to learn the meaning of new words.
  • Use multiple resources to enhance the comprehension of vocabulary.

Process

1.)         Get into groups of five to form your weather team.

2.)         Click on the links to the websites.

3.)         Use the clues given to figure out what each term means.

4.)         Take vocabulary quiz with the PowerPoint.

5.)         Once you’ve passed the quiz, prepare your weather report with your classmates.

6.)         Assign a term to each of the five people in your group that he or she is able to explain.

7.)         Your presentation will need to be 4-5 minutes in length.

8.)         At the end of the week the class will view each presentation.

Teacher is responsible for overseeing students and making sure they are on task.  Part of the goal is to teach student to learn to work independently.

This would be a week-long project, 40 minutes a day during the school week.  The project is either single or multidisciplinary, based on how the students are working together.

It may be challenging to help students remain on task and work with the time given.

The teacher must be able to communicate directions properly.  Allow the students to work independently without much interference by the teacher.
