Position: Part-time Assistant Professor

Duties: Teach courses related to world music and music appreciation to graduate ethnomusicology, undergraduate music and non-music majors.

Research Interests

·      Primary: Music and culture of mainland Southeast and East Asia, specializing in ethnomusicological study of Thailand, Cambodia, Burma, and Laos, as well as China.

·      Secondary: American Roots music, specifically Blues and Jazz, rock and roll history, as well as nineteenth and early twentieth century European and American art music.  Also, Mayan traditions from Yucatan and Chiapas, Mexico and Guatemala.

·      Other: Asian religious traditions, Southeast Asian languages, Ramayana and other Asian literature.

-       Music as a World Phenomenon

Description: This course introduces a variety of music from several countries around the world.  Listening and active participation is emphasized.

Students: Non-music major undergraduates.

Class Size: Between fifteen to fifty students.

Duties: Design and instruct entire course, including syllabus, lectures, exams, and WebCT assignments.  Graduate assistants have frequently observed my lectures as a model for their own instruction of the class.

-       Asian Music

Description: This course surveys the music of Asia.  Listening and active participation is emphasized.  Graduate students are expected to present their research to the class.

Students: Both graduate and undergraduate students, mostly ethnomusicology majors.

Class Size: Nine students.

Duties: Design and instruct entire course as a temporary replacement for full professor on sabbatical.

-       Music of Non-Western Cultures

Description: This course introduces a variety of music from several countries, excluding art music traditions from Europe and the United States.

Students: Music major undergraduates.

Class Size: Approximately fifty students.

Duties: Similar to the Music as a World Phenomenon, this course allows deeper discussion of musical principles and increased participation with in-class music performances.

-       Understanding Music

Description: This course introduces the stylistic periods of European and American art music from cultural and historical perspectives.  Listening and first-hand observation is emphasized.

Students: Non-music major undergraduates.

Class Size: Between ten and one hundred students depending on the semester.

Duties: Design and instruct entire course.  Have included field trips to open rehearsals of the Cleveland Orchestra.

-       Individual Investigation

Description: Advise a student on a research topic and evaluate the final project.

Students: Undergraduate.

Class Size: One Student.

Duties: Mentor and evaluate student research project.

Description: This course introduces the stylistic periods of European and American art music from cultural and historical perspectives.  Listening and first-hand observation is emphasized.

exams.
