Accusative of Duration of Time

The accusative can express a duration of time which the action of the verb required in order to be completed.  This is an adverbial accusative use that does not require a preposition in Latin.  Here are some examples:

tres horas ambulabamus, "we were walking for three hours"

sex annos manebamus, "we were staying for six years"

The accusative of duration of time describes how long or how much time the action of the verb continued.  See the Related Topics for more expressions of time.
