Nominative as Subj. Comp.

When the skeleton is linking and the verb is finite (with a personal ending), there must be both a subject and a subject complement in the nominative.  Here are some examples (with the nominative subject complement underlined):

Rex canis magnus est.  "Rex is a big dog."

Oculi sunt in amore duces.  "The eyes are the generals in love."

Note: adjectives can function as subject complements in a liking skeleton.  They will also be in the nominative case:

Rex magnus est.  "Rex is big."
