Semantics

SEMANTICS is the area of language concerned with word meaning.

Some notes on semantics:

bulletSemantic roles - inform the reader regarding "who, what, when, where, why, how" etc.
bulletSemantic categories - the inherent, context-free properties of lexical items.  A semantic category is a list of words with associated meanings (e.g. animate nouns, abstract nouns, nouns describing place, personal names, verbs of thinking, verbs of asking, etc.)
bulletSemantic range - describes the range of meaning a word can have.  One-to-one correspondence between an English and Latin word does not exist.  It is necessary to consider the complete semantic range of a Latin word relative to the context it appears in before making a final word choice in translation.  Dictionaries give the semantic range in their definition of a word.  The order in which these meanings appear is often "base meaning, common meaning, stem meaning, extended meaning, metaphoric meaning, poetic meaning, contextual meaning".
