Pleasing topics for paper number 2.

Pleasing topics for paper number 2.

1. Let's see now...Japan is Asian, and so is China. Japan was agrarian, and so was China. Japan wasbird1.jpg (15070 bytes) Confucian, and so was China. Japan was forced to change because of Western imperialism, and so was China? So why the heck was it possible for Japan to industrialize before China?

2. I was just wondering, what were the wondrous causes of the wonderful Chinese Revolution? And I was also wondering, what role did Mao Zedong play in it?

3. Why do you think Gordon White titled his book Riding the Tiger? Also, do you agree with his basic reasoning concerning politics, market socialism, and change in China today? If so, why? If not, why not?

4. Gordon White feels that the concept of a developmental state is an excellent method to understanding China. Do you agree with him? Or, is there something you feel is missing from his theoretical approach? In the case of the former, explain why his theory is superior to liberal economics. In the case of the latter, expand on his ideas with thoughts of your own so as to improve on the concept of the developmental state.

5. Still here? Good for you! Now then, answer me this - What were the major differences between Deng Xiaoping and Mao Zedong? Be sure to deal with theory as well as practice!
