Hello and welcome to your final class paper topics.

PAPER NUMBER THREE:

The absolute ultimate in paper questions...

Hello and how are you doing this fine spring day? I hope you have time to relax, dig a garden or two, and enjoy these gorgeous spring time paper questions. Remember...to acquire the maximum number of spring time points you need to provide a great intro, iron-clad logic, extensive brilliance and also make exhaustive use of various related readings. Oh, did I mention the value of correct citations?

1.  What the heck did Deng meant when he talked about China wasting "30 years?" And do you think his reforms will lead China to the final goal he wanted? If so, why? If not, why not?

 2. China, Japan and the Koreas all had some form of a developmental state. Choose either China or Japan and compare it to one of the two Koreas. Then explain how the developmental state in the two countries you chose oversaw each country’s “Great Transformation.” Oh yeah…and why did they do it the way they did?

 3. Ok, I'm stumped. People living in Korea share the same past, same culture, and the same language. But, do they share the same type of developmental state? If so, why? If not, why not?

4. The impact of the "west" on China, Japan and Korea was really very different. Choose either China or Japan and compare it to Korea. Then explain how the two countries you chose responded to this impact. Oh yea…and why did they respond the way they did? (Hint: this impact is also taking place today!)

5. How are the culture and identities of South and North Korea tied to their respective forms of industrialization AND developmental state?

Have fun and enjoy!

Have fun and enjoy! Oh, and before I forget. If you can write the names for North and South Korea in Chinese characters, you get a generous +.1 added to your paper grade. What a deal!
