Course Description:   The course is designed to provide practical teaching tips to help doctoral students become more effective classroom teachers.

 

Course Objectives:    Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to

            Demonstrate familiarity with university policies and procedures regarding classroom conduct

            Identify factors that affect student learning and teacher effectiveness

            Design effective lectures

            Present effective lectures

            Apply teaching tips in lecture and discussion settings

           

Text:   Mastering the Techniques of Teaching, by J. Lowman, 2nd edition, Jossey-Bass Publishers.  For further reading, see McKeachie’s Teaching Tips, W.J. McKeachie, 10th edition, Houghton-Mifflin Co.

 

Grading:  The course grade (S/U) will be based on attendance and participation at all class sessions.  Unexcused absences will result in a grade of “U”.
