While the teaching team expects all members of the course to excel, for purposes of grading, the expectations for quality of work will vary depending on the level at which a student is enrolled, with the highest expectations for students enrolled at the Ph.D. level. Class Participation: Students will periodically turn in work completed during collaborative in-class activities and reflections of in-class discussions. These will be the basis for assigning class participation grades for the course. Portfolio: Each student will complete a portfolio during the semester. The portfolio will synthesize the scientific and pedagogical themes from the course and will consist primarily of activities completed weekly outside of class. Term Paper: Students enrolled in the course for graduate credit will complete a term paper on a scientific theme considered during the course. Grading for the term paper will consist of a weighted average of three parts: a one page topic description (10%), a first draft (20%), and the final paper (70%). These items will be due as follows:
Topic selection – Monday, October 10 (1-page description of topic and a
preliminary list of references) Exams: A one-hour midterm exam will be held during class on Monday, October 24. The final exam is a required element of the course and is scheduled for 5:45 – 8:00 pm on Monday, December 12. Exams will include short answer and essay questions on both the scientific and pedagogical themes discussed in class. Exam questions may require the synthesis or analysis of maps and graphs. Missed Classes and Make-up Exams: Students are expected to attend all class periods. If you miss a class session, please consult with the instructor for information about the material you missed. Students who miss an in-class exam must provide a written excuse in order to receive a make-up test. Legitimate excuses include written documentation of the following: your own illness, death in the family, or military or official university athletic commitments. If you are involved in military or official university athletic activities, please review the exam schedule at the beginning of the term and consult with the instructor prior to the exam if you have a conflict. If an illness, personal crisis or family tragedy causes you to miss an exam, you must contact the instructor by phone or email no later than 48 hours after the scheduled start time of the in-class exam. You must provide your full name, email address and a telephone number where you can be reached in your phone or email message. The privilege of submitting a make-up exam may be forfeited if these instructions are not strictly followed. |
