You probably did, by the time I send this. Check
http://www.notmuch.com and see what time your local NPR station will
air / aired it. Most played it last night, but mine is this afternoon.

I plan to tape it -- I can always make copies and send them out (for a
small fee -- the medium and PSH).

I just heard KW's Jazz Squad perform two tunes on NPR's "Michael
Feldman's Whad'Ya Know." She and the band sounded great! Maybe someone
else will recall the first song--the second was "Yesterdays" and it
was sultry! The audience was surprisingly enthusiastic; you could almost
feel their affection and support through those little car speakers.

Jimbo and Stu Cole were the only other Zippers playing with her today.
The combo included a pianist, a saxophonist and a trombone player. Did I
miss anyone? I've got to admit, I did miss Ken and Tom's sax licks. The
Jazz Squad instrumental breaks definitely sounded different from the
Zippers, which I guess is intentional.

Katherine allowed as how the Jazz Squad plays more modern music than the
Zippers, (in this case, a '40's tune). Michael Feldman observed that much
ado had been made about KW's singing like Buddy Holly. (It was good for a
chuckle.) Kat said she'd "tried to stop," but that was just how she sings.

Can anyone add to this? More impressions, the identity of the first song,
or whether there were other players?

Cheers, Bryan

A few mo.s ago (I just remembered!), I was visiting Barnes and Noble
and noticed that Perennial Favorites was on the cheap shelf as well as
the "top 40" shelf and the standard CD shelf (all with different
prices, mind you). The one on the bargain case seemed a little
strange, so I looked closer. Strangely, it was in a normal jewel case!
I didn't buy it, so I didn't see how the innards were preserved. It
was only $6. I also saw Hot over there. What's up with this? I haven't
seen these discs anywhere else since.

BTW, This makes four versions for Hot: promotional, standard (out of
print), ECD custom case, and ECD jewel case (yes, the Macromedia logo
was present).

That is a GREAT album!!!! Although, I thought of it as a second Bowl Of Fire
cd (since its members are Bowl Of Fire plus two horns). Does anybody else
already have the Heretic Blues cd too???? If so, what do you think of "Girl
From New York City"???? I only got to listen to half of "Yesterday" from the
Jazz Squad radio broadcast, but it comes on again tommorow at 1:oo on my NPR
so i'll get to hear the whole thing. Did they ask Kat any questions???? The
part I did hear was really good, Kat and the band really sounded together.

For anybody who has the NPR interview with Andrew Bird, what was he like
personality wise???? When I met him in person he seemed kind of distant, and
i've heard other people say that too. Maybe its the oatmeal...

Well if you haven't been to www.snzippers.com lately, go there now!

write a nice (not nasty) email to the Southern Style Nuts people
(customerservice@southernstylenuts.com) and tell them just what you think
about all this nonsense.

I caught Kat's performance on that "What Do you Know?" show. the show was
pretty cool. I almost missed it, but thanks to a registered letter (to me)
from the Akron OH courts system and the subsequent freaking-out of my
mother, I was waken up just in time.

It was really odd to hear Kat sing those "new-style" jazz songs. they're 60
years old, yet they sound like a style of jazz i've never heard before.
hehe. I guess i'm in an Hot Jazz haze.

I taped it too. but it's only 15 mins long or so. i'm sure someone here
will send y'all a copy. don't forget to buy the album tuesday! yay!

About the interview: Hmmmm.....well we should be doing it this week. I
didn't hear from ken all last week, so i called him up, and talked to Beth.
hpefully she gave him the message that I am pathetic and need to talk to him.

there's a 99% chance i'm going to Hillsborough for the Jim/Kat/Sideways
Alley/Hobex big phat Barn Dance and Chapel Hill for Kat's opening night
with the Dirty Dozen. Excited? YES! More on that to-morrow.

Which means that if i interview tom and ken i must do it before friday cuz
i won't have a computer to send it to my co-editor for publication on the
1st. we could hold off until the 2nd when i get back. Who knows. But i've
got the sweetest prize imagineable to coincide with the interview...so tell
your friends.

oooh! Andrew Bird is coming to cleveland! happy day! Maybe i'll go to
Toledo too....ROCK....

Allright. My computer crashed today and it was fixing itself for over 24
hours. But now we're all right, and i got all my stuff done for today. It's
4:42 am. I just saw Star Wars again. Not a match to my friend Pedro who has
seen it 8 times. but eh.

See what happens when i am away for 24 hours? i ramble. Goodnight.

Jess

Bob Pigeon asked:

>>So Jess, what day are you doing that interview????
>speaking of, i have a question:
>WHO IS SHORTY BROWN?

Hmm...good question, but too late. I just got off the phone with Ken and
the interview was super. I didn't get to talk to Tom, but we decided to
wait till the album comes out, in August.

The interview went really well. we talked for about an hour and a half (oh
ken's dime. bless him!) and I'm typing out about 90% of it (except some of
the hush-hush stuff about the lawsuit) so you can read it when the new
Shrubbery goes up!

As for your question, Bob, I suggest posting that to the guestbook on
www.snzippers.com

I lookd up "Shorty Brown" on altavista, and I came up with lots of links to
Gulf Coast Mustang clubs. Jim owns a mustang (car)....maybe he bought it
from Mr. Brown and wanted to use his name to copyright his music :)

Hey....this interview is way too long, so i'm cutting it down. a lot. Don't
worry, i'll put the uncut version on The Landing website. BUT, there's even
more I can't put in there, but i thought you all would find this funny, so
here's a little story about Je:

KEN: The last tour we were on, I went on the bus and our tour manager was
yelling at Je. Something had to be wrong, because no one yells at Je. He's
like "Je, you can't expect me to hold on to all this peanut butter."
"well, I just want to take it home' cuz I can
stockpile it and keep eatin' it."
When we're on the bus, there's no room at all. He has a whole drawer and
we'd been to 14 shows, and there's 14 jars of peanut butter in this drawer,
and our tour manager's shit is all over the floor.
He was like "Je, how much are these jars of peanut butter worth?"
"thirty bucks?"
"I'll give you thirty bucks for the drawer."
"that's not the point!"
"it is the point! Throw it out!"
"I can't waste it!"
"well I'll waste it, here's the $30!"
ME: I heard Je's the hippy of the group.
KEN: well I think I'm the hippy of thr group. Je's the spaceman.

Well that's all. hope that image brought a smile to your faces!

Jess

I got my copy of Jazz Squad today. I just got home so I haven't had time to
listen to it yet, although the pictures inside are really good. You don't
have to order it, I called my local boarders yesterday and they said they
have had them in for a while, but just couldn't sell them. When I went there
today I only saw about 4 copies. I don't know if thats good or bad because I
didn't see how many were put out. All of the Dirty Dozen's BUCK JUMP were
gone. Has anybody heard the Lincon Center Jazz Orchestra's tribute cd for
Duke Ellington???? It's really good! that band really does duke some
justice. For anybody who has never heard duke before, I don't know what your
waiting for. Duke has some of the most powerful and motivational music ever.
Some of my favorite songs are: Black and Tan Fantasy, C jam Blues, Mood
Indigo, Happy go lucky, East St. Louis Toodle-oo, Caravan, etc....

Probably the best price is from Mammoth: 12+3=15, including the remix
CD. No tax unless in NC.

As for the CD itself....welp I listened to half of it and i really like it
so far! It's got a great small club feel to it, like she's singing right in
your ear. it seems like a good album to cuddle to (take note, guys)...now,

It was a remix of 'Suits' done by the dust brothers. The Zippers had nothing
to do with it, so it doesn't apeal to me at all. Besides, techno and remixes
get on my nerves...damn drum tracks.

Hey! I resent that! If it wasn't for me, you would have actually had to pay

I have been just jivin' to the CD. It's really really enjoyable...yesterday

feel-good jazziness. If you have the means, i highly recommend picking one

Hello SSN. I am a devout Squirrel Nut Zippers -- the band -- fan. I
saw their video on MTV when it debuted a couple years ago and now own
almost every CD of theirs. The point is, if it weren't for your
anti-SNZ (the band) stance and pending lawsuit, I -- and potentially
thousands of others -- would be buying your candy.

It's not like calling a band Milky Way or Hershey Kiss; people become
interested in the CANDY when they hear of the BAND. You could probably
be making a LOT of money if you capitalized on this situation.
Consider the potentials: selling the candy at concerts or through mail
order. Or maybe by having promotions -- "One lucky 5-cent candy sends
you on an all-expense paid trip to see, and meet, the Zippers!"
"Collect the five different wrappers and mail them in for a $2 rebate
on any SNZ release!" And that would lead to greater awareness and good
press for Southern Style. You see, you have nothing to gain by this
lawsuit, and everything to lose.

I would be interested to hear your POV as well -- considering I hear
all my news on this suit from the band and fellow fans, maybe I'm
missing something.

In case you haven't seen it yet, see http://www.snzippers.com (which
is run by the saxophone player in the group).
