Betsy Lucal

Betsy Lucal is Professor of Sociology at Indiana University South Bend, where she also teaches in the Women's and Gender Studies and Master of Liberal Studies programs. She is Past Chair of the American Sociological Association's Section on Sex & Gender and previously served as Chair of the ASA Section on Teaching & Learning in Sociology, as well as Chair of ASA's Committee on the Status of GLBT Persons in Sociology. She has served three terms on the Editorial Board of TEACHING SOCIOLOGY and a term as Deputy Editor of GENDER & SOCIETY. Lucal currently edits the Gender Section of SOCIOLOGY COMPASS. She also is serving a term as the At-Large Director of the Midwest Sociological Society. She is a member of Indiana University's Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching (FACET) and a winner of the Indiana University South Bend Distinguished Teaching Award, the all-IU Sylvia E. Bowman Award for teaching excellence, the Trustees Teaching Award (4 times), and the Hans O. Mauksch Award for Distinguished Contributions to Undergraduate Teaching. Lucal earned all 3 of her degrees at Kent State University (Bachelor of General Studies, summa cum laude and with honors, 1989; Master of Arts in Sociology, 1991; Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology, 1996). As a graduate student, she taught at Kent's main campus, as well as the Salem and East Liverpool campuses; Youngstown State University; and The University of Akron. She lives in South Bend with her partner, Alison Moss, and children, Jaymeson and Xavier Moss.
