Coincée au fond de son fjord enserré dans des montagnes abruptes et boisées, Marmaris es devenu depuis quelques années le principal port de plaisance de la côte turque (700 places), entre Bodrum et Antalya. Face à l’île de Rhodes, c’est aujourd’hui une petite ville à la mode et fort coquette, plus citadine que Bodrum, parfaitement équipée en hôtels de toutes catégories. Ainsi le village-club de vacances Marti, à 7 km du centre, où sont proposées des animations pour toute la famille (tennis, squash, sauna, discothèque en plein air), au bord d’une plage de palmiers et de pins.

Pour trouver une plage vraiment tranquille, n’hésitez cependant pas à pousser à 80 km vers la pointe de la presau’île, vers les ruines de l’ancienne Cnide, jusqu’à un village de pêcheurs nommé Datça à côté duquel s’étend une longue plage de sable fin, encore très peu fréquentée.

On peut y loger pour trois fois rien chez l’habitant, mais si vous cherchez votre confort, descendez plutôt au Kiosque des Fées, un tout nouvel hôtel au bord de l’eau, dont l’architecture ottomane vient d’être primée au concours Agha Khan (une semaine en pension complète, de 3470 F à 5150 F vol compris, avec Turban France Tours). Et vous aurez en prime, tout au long de la côte (superbement sauvage) des criques désertes, de merveilleuses balades dans une nature odorante, des excursions d’une journée à Rhodes, et la possibilité de louer un bateau (avec son capitaine qui vous fera même la cuisine) pour découvrir des îles et îlots, dont la plupart ne figurent sur aucune carte, qui parseèment le golfe de Bodrum.

Hidden at the end of a fjord between steep, thickly wooded mountains, Marmaris has become, in recent years, the principal marina on the Turkish coast, with 700 slips. Located between Bodrum and Antalya and facing the island of Rhodes, it is a small city à la mode and very chic, more urban than Bodrum, richly endowed with hotels of all classes. Take, for example, the resort hotel Marti, located along a beach of pine and palm trees about four miles from downtown. Marti boasts activities and amenities for the whole family, like tennis, squash, a sauna, and an outdoor dance club.

But if what you really want is to find a beach that is especially secluded and calm, don't hesitate to travel 50 miles heading to the tip of the peninsula, toward the ruins of the ancient city of Cnidos. Push on until you reach the fishing village called Datca, next to which stretches a long beach of fine sand-amazingly, it's not often visited.

It's possible to stay there for next to nothing through a home stay with the locals, but if you are looking for your own private accommodations, check out "Kiosque des Fées", a brand new waterfront hotel whose Ottoman structural design just received the Agha Khan Award for Architecture. On top of that, all along the superbly natural coast you can find secluded coves in which to pass the time. You can even spend your days strolling through the fragrant flora or on a day-long excursion to Rhodes. There's always the possibility of renting a boat (the captain will even cook for you!) to discover islands big and small--many of which are not found on any map--scattered throughout the Gulf of Bodrum.
