Lesson Summary

This lesson will teach students how to identify recyclable materials and integrate the practice of recycling into their own homes. The students will also learn words associated with recycling and create a take home project modeling Planet Earth.

Objectives

At the completion of this lesson, students will:

-         Identify recyclable vs. non-recyclable items

-         Identify different types of recyclable items including:

o       Plastic

o       Aluminum

o       Paper

o       Glass

- Students will have ideas for integrating recycling into their homes

 

Duration

The Recycling Lesson will take approximately eight class periods to complete.

 

Lesson Type

 

The activities in this lesson require students to complete worksheets and make presentations as individuals.

 

Technology Integration

The technology used in this lesson plan will be used by the teacher and then presented to the class. The teacher will collect data provided by the students and create a “Class Chart” using Excel. The chart will be printed out and hung in the classroom.  The teacher will also use a digital camera to photograph student presentations of recyclable materials.

 

Instructional Procedures

Week One

Monday:

-         Start class with introduction of recycling

o       Three parts: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

o       Some materials are recyclable and some are not

- Read story (The Three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle by: Núria Roca)

- Introduce “Home Project”, pass out worksheet

o       Use Recycling Worksheet from Tuesday until Friday to write down recyclable items in the home correlating with information learned in class

o       Teacher will use this information to create a “Class Recycling Chart”

o       Monday of the second week students will also bring in a recyclable object from home

Tuesday:

-         Begin class with story (The Adventures of a Plastic Bottle by: Alison Inches)

-         Work through examples of recyclable plastic vs. non-recyclable plastic

o       Milk Jug

o       Pop Bottle

o       Water Bottle

-         Pass out Plastic Worksheet

o       Students will trace “Plastic” and then draw examples of recyclable plastics

Wednesday:

-         Begin class with story (The Adventures of an Aluminum Can by: Alison Inches)

-         Work through examples of recyclable aluminum vs. non-recyclable aluminum

o       Pop Cans

o       Aluminum Foil

-         Pass out Aluminum Worksheet

o       Students will trace “Aluminum” and then draw examples of recyclable aluminum

Thursday:

-         Begin class with story (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Paper by: Alexandra Fix)

-         Work through examples of recyclable paper vs. non-recyclable paper

o       Newspaper

o       Copy Paper

o       Magazines

o       Phonebooks

o       Cardboard

-         Pass out Paper Worksheet

o       Students will trace “Paper” and then draw examples of recyclable paper

Friday:

-         Begin class with story (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Glass by: Alexandra Fix)

-         Work through examples of recyclable glass vs. non-recyclable glass

o       Glass drinking bottles

o       Glass jars (jam, jelly, etc)

-         Pass out Glass Worksheet

o       Students will trace “Glass” and then draw examples of recyclable glass

Week Two

Monday:

-         Collect “Home Project Worksheet”

-         Students will present their “from home” recyclable object; teacher takes picture of student with object

o       Students:

§         What is their object?

§         How do you know if it is recyclable?

-         TEACHER AT HOME: Collect data and create class chart

Tuesday:

-         Assign students a letter of the Recyclable Alphabet

-         Provide materials for students to use to decorate letters

-         Hang letters around room

-         Present Class Recycling Chart

Wednesday:

        - Class Project: Coffee Filter Earths

Evaluation

The evaluation for this lesson will be based on participation in class and “at home” project. Students will also be graded on daily recycling worksheets and class presentation

o       Plastic

-         Markers, Crayons, Colored Pencils, Glue Stick, Tape, Stapler

-         Coffee Filters

-         Spray Bottle/Water

-         Construction Paper

-         Examples of recyclable materials (plastic, paper, aluminum, glass)

Materials for Students:

-         Pencil

-         Recyclable object from home

-         A brain ready to learn!
