Project 1 – Camera Practice

The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your ability to use camcorder controls.

Find a project partner who will appear in some of your shots. This could be (but does not have to be) another member of this class.

Record the ten shots listed below on your videotape in the required order with no blank spaces, "snow," or extra shots in between.

Shoot in a well-lit interior. Use a tripod and manual focus for this project. Check your focus and practice each shot before recording it. Record each shot for about 10 seconds.

Cue the tape to the beginning of the first shot before turning it in.

Write a short critique of your shots and turn it in with the tape. Your critique should be word-processed or typed and no longer than one page.

SHOT LIST

1. Slate – Write your name, project name and number and date due in large letters on a piece of paper and take a full-screen shot of it.

2. Fade in from black to an establishing shot (long shot or wide shot) of the room.

3. Medium shot (MS) of something interesting in the room. Pan slowly to show something else that is interesting.

4. Start with a MS of an object and zoom in slowly to a close-up (CU) of a small detail.

5. Same as the previous shot, but zoom rapidly.

6. MS of your project partner in front of a window, using normal camera set-up.

7. Same as the previous shot, but use the backlight setting.

8. Wide shot (WS) of the room. Have your partner walk past the camera lens.

9. Extreme close-up (ECU) of a coin. Use the directions for shooting with macro focus.

10. Start with a WS of the room and fade to black.
