According to Choice Theory, we are born with five genetically determined
needs:
- Survival
- Power and respect
- Love and belonging
- Freedom
- Fun
Power and respect, love and belonging, freedom, and fun are considered
psychological needs; the importance of these needs as well as the need for
survival, varies from individual to individual. Choice theory seeks to
provide a theoretical framework for helping people gain control over their
lives by recognizing these five needs and making effective, responsible
choices to satisfy them. It should be noted that at times these needs may
be in conflict with each other; at other times, a person, situation, or
event may simultaneously satisfy two or more needs. |
