All work for this course must be completed and posted in a folder on a web server accessible to the participants in the course and the addresses posted at the course wiki site http://designingmultimedia.wikispaces.com/

Exploration, Inquiry and Discussion (20%, 2 points for each forum)
We will explore the use of Flash and respond to a series of questions in the Vista forum. You are expected to participate actively in both asynchronous and synchronous discussions. Chats and forum postings will constitute 20% of your final grade.

Flash Tutorial Exercises (40%, 5 points for each of the eight exercises)
You will complete all the Flash exercises in the Macromedia Professional 8 Hands-On Training (H.O.T.) book. You will post eight (8) swf files (with each for 5 points). These exercises will be similar to those in the book, except for some small modifications. Only the Flash files – i.e., files with the appendix “.swf” of your exercises should be posted to the server according to the course schedule. Do not post html files for these tutorials, simply because we will be looking for the swf files. The Flash exercises will count 40% of the final course grade.

Project 1: Flash Animation (10%)
Project 1 is a short animation in Flash on a topic of your choice. The movie should contain animation, user-created graphics, motion tweening (implying the use of symbols) and shape tweening.

Post your project as Project1.htm or Project1.swf. Project 1 will constitute 10% of the final grade. The project will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

Overall Quality:

2 points

Contains a professional visual quality
All content is well integrated and appropriate to the animation

Length and Comprehensiveness:

2 points

Represents approximately 20-30 seconds of moving content
Demonstrates judicious use of required skills (see above)
File works

Tweening :

3 points

Includes at least one shape tween
Includes at least one motion tween
Implicit in this is that there is at least one symbol in the library

Graphics:

3 points

Includes at least one vector graphic
Demonstrates effective use of drawing tools
Graphics are of a high quality

Project 2: Instructional Website (30%)
Project 2 (also your final project) will be an advanced website on a subject of your choosing. This project directs you to combine the skills you acquire in the HOT book (the practical) with what you know or learned about instructional design, learning, and multimedia (the theoretical) through our course discussions. The project should represent about 15 minutes of continuous activity. To clarify, this is not to say 15 minutes of movement or animation, but 15 minutes of activity on the part of a learner. The project should be a multimedia lesson created using Flash and employing many of the skills acquired during the course. The time dimension above is a guide, an important milestone, rendering an approximate idea of how much content/interaction you need to construct.

Post your project to your portfolio site as Project2.htm or Project2.swf. Project 2 will constitute 30% of the final course grade. The project will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

Overall Quality:

7 points

Contains a professional visual quality
All content is well integrated and appropriate to the project

Length and Comprehensiveness:

7 points

Represents approximately 15 minutes of learner activity
Incorporates sound application of learning theory and ID principles

Audio and Video:

6 points

Includes at least one user-controlled sound
Includes at least one video segment

Animation and Graphics:

6 points

Includes at least one vector graphics
Includes at least one motion tween
Includes at least one shape tween

Navigation and Buttons:

7 points

Contains at least one user-navigated button
Is organized clearly and accounts for variability among users
Note: This second piece is about Usability

Interactivity and Instructional Value:

7 points

The project employs significant levels of user engagement
The project incorporates user input through actionscripting, components, and/or input text fields.

Completing assignments and projects in a timely fashion and doing your best work is the best way of ensuring excellent performance. Please note that the Ohio Board of Regents and Kent State University policies dictate that graduate courses should require approximately 3 hours of outside class work for every hour of contact time (i.e., 3 contact hours / week). This means that you should spend an average of 10-12 hours each week on this course, through self study, experiments, exploration and class postings. Grading will be based on a subjective evaluation of the time and effort invested in class work. In other words, students who do not invest the required time will not receive A or B grades. It is critical to get an early start and keep up with the course requirements.
We will adopt the following policy for the course (copied from this site http://fpdc.kent.edu/FCubed/modules/gettingstarted/examples.html#grading):

All assignments are due on the date specified in the syllabus. Five points will be subtracted for each day the assignment is late. If an assignment is later than one week, and prior arrangements have not been made, the assignment will not be accepted. NOTE: If you are overwhelmed or feeling behind, please contact me before the assignment is due to discuss options.
All students are expected to meet graduate standards by obtaining a "B" average on all assignments. This graduate standard indicates that the work was well done, complete, met stated criteria, represents a strong professional effort, and was turned in on time. Students seeking an "A" will need to demonstrate superior performance through critical thinking, exemplary products, positive and supportive interactions with colleagues and sustained active participation across course activities.

Any assignment that receives lessthan an 80% may be reworked and resubmitted. In order to gain additional points, participants must indicate what they would like to improve upon and how they plan to do so. Participants will then have one week following receipt of a grade to make revisions. Participants are encouraged to work with their peers and share their work in order to receive feedback prior to due dates.
