Politics of the Global Economy
  Study Guide for Midterm 1

The examination will be 2 hours.  The format will be the following:

IDs, Short Answers, Essay, Examples

IDs
First, you will have to provide five identifications.  These questions require you to define the term or person AND state the significance to the course.  Half the grade will be based on your I.D. and half on significance.   By significance I mean you need to summarize why a term or person is relevant.

Short Answers
Second, you will be asked to answer two short answer questions.  These answers typically have several parts.

Essay
Finally, you will have to write two essays. I will select from one or more of the following questions. This means that you should PREPARE to answer all five questions.  I will probably pick three and give the chance to write on two.  If you do not prepare in advance, it is unlikely that you will have enough time to finish the exam.

1.  Scholars have issued a range of warnings about the impact that globalization is likely to have.  Write an essay that describes the arguments of at least two scholars whose work we read in the course but who emphasize different concerns about globalization.    Make sure that you: 1) clearly define the way each scholar conceptualizes globalization; 2) why they are worried about globalization; and 3) why they reach such different conclusions from Burtless et al.

2.  Drawing upon specific readings, write an essay that describes how the internet is likely to impact the democratic course of the global economy.

3.  Write an essay that describes: first, the challenges of governing the global economy; second, whether governance is even feasible; and third, what national models of capitalism you see as appropriate to copy and adapt to the global economy.  Make sure that when you write your essay that you support each of your answers with reference to course readings.

4.  Based on specific course readings, write an essay describing the impact that globalization is likely to have on German, US and Japanese capitalism.  Your answer should: first, compare several ways important ways in which these political-economic systems differ; and second, state how you believe globalization likely to effect each system differently.

5.  Write an essay that clearly articulates what new role Paul Hirst and Grahame Thompson believe the nation state will play in a more inter-nationalized economy and why.
