ENERGY CRISIS IN OUR TOWN A WebQuest for 5th Grade
Designed by Laura, Mike, Jared, Kerri
You
are a citizen of Dodge, a rapidly growing city looking for a new source of
power. For years Dodge has relied upon energy sources from a neighboring big
city. As Dodge continues to grow there is a need for the city to find its own
power source. The city has ample access to a big river, plenty of land for
development, known oil reserves underground and is sunny approximately 360
days a year. Dodge is made up of families who want to move farther from the
big city. In 1990 there were 15,000 people living here, now there are 32,000.
Below you will find four different citizen roles and four different sources of power. Your mission is to take on a role and decide which source of power will best benefit you and your needs in that role. Lastly, you will present your choice in one of four activities.
ENVIRONMENTALIST You are a very eco-minded citizen of
Dodge who is very actively involved in the environmental concerns of your
community. You will favor a source of power that will bring the least harm to
the environment. Good Luck! HOMEOWNER As a homeowner in Dodge, your main
concern is the health and well being of your family and your neighbors. You want a power source that is clean and
safe for your community, and will supply reliable energy to everyone. Also, because you and your neighbors are
middle class, you want an energy source that is inexpensive. Good Luck! MAYOR You are the mayor of Dodge. You have been mayor for sixteen years and have watched the city grow and prosper. You are looking for a power source that will help the economy of the city and make the citizens happy. You want to find a power source that will create the most jobs to attract as many people as possible to Dodge. You also want to keep the community safe and clean. Good Luck! BIG BUSINESS As the president and spokesman of many big businesses you are to decide which energy source best suites the needs of you and your associates. You are concerned with money. Because you don’t live in the town you are not concerned with safety or issues surrounding pollution. You want an energy source that is inexpensive to build and maintain and will last as long as possible. Good Luck! Use the following links to research Solar,
