Advanced Business/Professional Writing –WEB based

As you may already know, this class is conducted entirely via the World Wide Web. Thus, there will be no regular class meetings. You will interact with me and your classmates in a web classroom and via e-mail, participating in discussions and turning in assignments electronically.

To successfully complete the work required in this class, you’ll need regular access to a personal computer with an Internet connection and the most up to date Microsoft Office software suite. You can use a computer in one of the campus computer labs; or if you wish, you can buy a site license copy of the software for about $70 from the Flashline “My Courses” link. This is a bargain for a software package that usually sells for hundreds of dollars.

In addition, you’ll need to be able to do the following with your computer:

  • Use a web browser to connect to the Internet
  • Use Microsoft Word to compose documents
  • Use Microsoft PowerPoint to compose a slide presentation
  • Attach Word and PowerPoint to e-mail messages
  • Open e-mail attachments in your own computer
  • If you don’t have mastery of these skills, you may have trouble keeping up with the work in this class. Please consider your enrollment in this class carefully.

Most students agree that web-based classes are very convenient. However, I’d like to address a couple of misconceptions some people have about web courses.Although we won’t be meeting in person twice or three times a week, you still should plan to spend an average of 10 hours per week on this upper level writing class.Web courses take just as much time as regular classroom courses.

The requirements for this course include specific deadlines for discussion postings and other written assignments.I do not accept late assignments. This is not a “work-at-your-own-speed” course. The course runs for 15 weeks and deadlines must be met throughout that span.

I hope to help you improve your writing skills with the assignments I will give you during the semester. Moreover, I think the web is a good way for you to use the technical skills that will be so necessary to you in your career.Taking this course on the web will offer you enough flexibility that you might even have a little fun.
