This course is designed for readers, teachers, students and writers of Young Adult literature.  Class format includes lectures and extensive discussion of assigned readings.  All assignments will be explained in class, and students will have some flexibility in adapting assignments to suit their own interests in YA literature.  The course outline is tentative and may be changed to suit the changing needs of the class.

Text:  Nilsen and Donelson, Literature for Today's Young Adults

Assigned reading:  Check the syllabus for asterisks which denote when reading of the assigned book should be completed.  We will read eight books in common this semester, as noted below.  In addition, you will read at least one other book chosen according to guidelines presented in class.

Short stories:  Point of Departure:19 Short Stories of Youth and Discovery, Robert Gold, editor.

The Problem novel:   The Chocolate War, Robert Cormier.

The Accomplishment/Adventure story:  Dicey's Song, Cynthia Voight.

Historical fiction:   The Light in the Forest, Conrad Richter.

Supernatural/Science Fiction:  Frankenstein, Mary Shelley.

Nonfiction:  To Be a Slave, Julius Lester

Censored YA lit:  Go Ask Alice, anonymous (Beatrice Sparks).

Poetry:  Poetspeak, Paul Janeczko, editor.
