Student Projects for Literature for Young Adults

Marilyn Seguin

In this class you will read a wide variety of YA literature--some that I have chosen for you and some that you will select yourself.

Like the reading selections, your graded assignments in this course are designed to appeal to a wide variety of interests in YA literature.

Below are the assignments and rationales:

Because you might one day become a writer of YA literature:

One complete short story, or one chapter and an outline for the remainder of a YA novel.

First draft due week 3; final draft due week 7.

Because you might one day teach it:

One young adult literature program for use in a professional context.

Information will be presented in a panel discussion to the class, as well as in writing to the instructor. You will have a choice of genres from which to select a focus.

Because you are right now a student of it:

A final exam that will be explained to you in class, completed at home, and turned in during final exam week.

Creative paper---------------------25%

YA Literature program--------------25%

Quizzes on assigned reading--------20%

Attendance/class participation----- 5%

Final exam-------------------------25%

Note: Class participation is determined mainly by attendance records.

If you are not in class, you will not be able to participate. Your grade for the class participation portion of the total score will be lowered for each unexplained absence that exceeds three. For example, four absences will lower your class participation score from an A to a B; five absences will result in a C and so on. Quizzes are noted on the syllabus by * and they cannot be made up.
