      Introduction

This project examined the issues involved in thesaurus construction and undertook the construction of a thesaurus of parasitology, focusing on areas of economic concern: medical and veterinary parasitology, with supporting terms drawn from ecology and epidemiology. It was developed as a searching thesaurus as opposed to one primarily used for indexing purposes. It contains a large number of lead-in terms which can be used for free-text searching in databases which do not use controlled vocabularies (as primary means of access) and also those which do (supplementing the use of controlled vocabulary). The final product is a two-part thesaurus consisting of a hierarchical term listing and an alphabetical listing.
