I was disappointed to learn Dr Searle would not be keeping his speaking engagement here at Kent. I did listen to the interview and thought it was provacative. Dr. Searle has some very interesting views on philosophy. I rather enjoyed how he discussed diversity in the university setting. This has been a criticism that I share with him. Where is diversity in thought? Everything is great as long as you go along with what is expected from the higher levels in academia. Well, I believe it exist probably in greater depths within the studies of philosophy. But how much pressure does the department place on the Philosopher to conform to the overarching theme of diversity that Dr. Cartwright seems to promote?

Taken as a department, the Philosophy Department at Kent State is pretty successful at demonstrating the diversity of the entire department. Taken individually, we each have our own specialties, and seriously pursuing a specialty is often incompatible with being able to address the full breadth of a topic.
In my own case, I have taught intro to ethics, but that comes up against the limits of my competence. If I had to teach it as a topics oriented class instead of a historical class, then I would have an awful lot of work to do to get up to speed.
