MAJOR CONCEPTS A. Objective is to quickly communicate an idea "A picture is worth a thousand words."B. Objective is for proportion, not accuracy. Make mechanical drawing or CAD for accuracy if that is what you need. C. Sketches can document an original idea in a patent suit to prove the idea is yours. TECHNIQUES A. Sketches can and should be attractive. Sketching is not a invitation for dull pencils and sloppy work. Take pride in all your work and expect the best from yourself.B. Sketch vertical lines downward. C. Sketch horizontal lines away from the body. Left to right if right-handed D. Sketch diagonal lines downward. E. Box in circles to make them look round. F. Try light sketching strokes to begin the sketch. G. First box in the form with geometric shapes. Add details later. H. Try using dots as targets and look at the target, not the pencil. I. Consider the pencil as an extension of your hand and your mind. Don't worry so much about the production of the sketch. Focus your attention on the object you wish to share. "Think with the pencil." J. In the "real world" any drawing tool is used; a pencil on a table napkin, a stick in dirt, etc. K. Test straight lines by holding the paper at eye level and sighting down the line for "drift". |
