GEOMETRIC CONSTRUCTIONS

Importance

Geometric constructions serve as the foundation of all objects drawn in a building block fashion. These techniques must be understood and accurately applied to insure mathematically correct instructions for successful designs.

Terms

Study your text and a dictionary if you need to review the following selected terms.

A. Parallel Q. Inscribed

B. Perpendicular R. Circumscribed

C. Tangent

D. Concentric

E. Eccentric

F. Obtuse

G. Acute

H. Complementary

I. Supplementary

J. Circumference

K. Diameter

L. Radius / Radii

M. Chord

N. Secant

O. Polygon

P. Equilateral

Selected Constructions

It is suggested that you be able to execute the following constructions. This list is selected and represents common constructions which should part of your repertoire for efficiency. Infrequently used constructions need not be memorized and can be "looked up" when needed. It is true that CAD programs make geometric constructions automatically, but the concepts must nevertheless be understood.

A. Bisecting a line and an angle

B. Drawing lines parallel and perpendicular to a given line

C. Dividing a line into equal or proportional parts

D. Constructing an arc tangent to a right corner - a fillet

E. Constructing an arc tangent to two straight lines not at a right angle

F. Constructing an arc tangent to another arc and a straight line

G. Constructing an inside arc tangent to two arcs

H. Constructing an outside arc tangent to two arcs

I. Constructing an arc tangent to the outside of one arc and tangent to the inside of the other arc

J. Finding the center of an arc or circle by intersecting bisected chords

K. Constructing an arc tangent to a straight line and a given point

L. Constructing the ogee curve

M. Constructing an inscribed ("across the corners") hexagon

N. Constructing a circumscribed ("across the flats") hexagon

O. Constructing the pentagon

P. Constructing the octagon

Q. Constructing an ellipse ( three types )

R. Constructing the helix

S. Constructing the involutes
