ROBERT W. CLAWSON holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, in Soviet Studies. He is Professor Emeritus of European Military Studies at Kent State University and co-founder of the Lyman L. Lemnitzer Center for NATO studies where he was resident specialist in the Warsaw Pact until its dissolution. His Russian Language training was at the U.S. Army Language School (now DLI) and at the University of Moscow, where he also was an exchange member of the faculty of law, doing research for his doctoral dissertation. He is a life-long helmet collector and since the fall of the Soviet Union has made a concerted effort to obtain at least one example of every Russian or Soviet combat helmet issued between 1916 and 2001. He had unprecedented access to Russian specialists and data on the history and technology of Russian and Soviet helmets.
