Addendum: Versions of the SSH-39 Stamped "Training"
The folks at Ostfront have turned up another interesting example of the hybrid SSh-39 shell with the renovated SSh-40 liner system installed. The photos included below illustrate the unbalanced location of the three pads suspended by tabs from the three rivets on the mid-crown. On the inside of the helmet is stamped the "UCHEBNY" in Russian, meaning "training." The stamp indicates, at the very least, that these particular helmets were not considered suitable for actual combat. The renovations apparently took place in the 1950s and do not seem to have been widely replicated. Thus, those bearing this stamp should be considered rare.
Above is an inner view of an SSh-39 with SSh-40 style liner pads suspended from three tabs riveted to the 1939 shell. The production stamp indicates that it was renovated at the Leningrad Metallurgical Factory in 1950. The meaning of the stenciled "9" is unknown. The "UCHEBNY" stamp is not visible in this photo. See photo below.
Visible (upside down) in the inside bowl of the SSh-39 shell is the stamp bearing the Russian word "UCHEBNY," meaning "training." It is inside a clearly marked rectangle and is just a few centimeters from one of the rivets and tabs that hold each of the three SSh-40 style liner pads.
