Practice tips for learning modes

All modes begin with Do

• Mode I -Dorian = Do re me fa sol la te do'

  • Begin by singing: Do re me fa sol - up and down - It is the same as minor

  • Add the lower te - Practice: Do te, do re me fa sol fa me re do te, do

  • Add the tetrachord below: Do te, la, sol,

  • Finish the octave: Do re me fa sol la te do'

  • Make up patterns using the octave above do and the tetrachord below: sol, do sol do'

• Mode III - Phrygian = Do ra me fa sol le te do' (Natural minor except for ra)

  • Use the same patterns as mode I

• Mode V - Lydian = Do re mi fi so la ti do' (major with fi)

• Mode VII - Mixolydian = Do re mi fa sol la te do' (major with te)
