In general progressions begin with I and end with V - I
The tonic chord can progress to any chord

Circle of Fifths

 

Major:

I - IV - vii° - iii – vi – ii – V – I

 

Minor:

I - iv -VII - III – VI – ii° – V – I

 

Descending by thirds

 

Major:

I – vi – IV – ii – vii - V

 

Minor:

I – VI – iv - ii° - vii° - V

 

Other Progressions

 

Major:

IV - V

V - vi (deceptive cadence)

I - iii – IV

IV - I (Plagal Cadence)

 

Minor:

iv - V

iv - i (Plagal Cadence)

V-VI (deceptive cadence)

 v6 - iv6

 

Common substitutions:

IV can replace ii

V can replace vii°

vii°can replace V

Minor:
