Mid-morning, on a cold and clear August day, the team of ESPACIO journalists made their way to the FOSA forests. On the edge of one forest, five of these machines were working in line, felling trees as if they were twigs, debarking and cutting the wood at no more than one minute per tree.

Al borde de un monte, cinco de estas máquinas trabajaban alineadas, cortando los árboles como si fueran palitos, descortezando y trozando la madera a razón de no más de un minuto por árbol.

At the harvesting site, we are received by José Paulo Urtempertinger, FOSA Operations Manager.  "We are getting around 200 to 230 m3 of wood per hectare. It is a good forest”, he expresses.

Brazilian by birth and Uruguayan by adoption, José Paulo (in FOSA, nobody uses his surname) is an Agronomist with a post-graduate degree in Forestry Physiology from the University of Piracicaba. He is responsible for operations in FOSA's 6 districts.
Brasileño de nacimiento y uruguayo por adopción, José Paulo (en FOSA nadie lo llama por su apellido) es agrónomo con un postgrado en fisiología forestal, de la Universidad de Piracicaba. Es el responsable de las operaciones en los 6 distritos de FOSA.
A great amount of harvest residue remains on the ground: bark, branches and the ends of the trees, will decompose and be incorporated into the earth with the passage of time.

Gran cantidad de residuos de cosecha quedan en el suelo: corteza, ramas y las puntas de los árboles, se irán descomponiendo e incorporando al suelo, con el paso del tiempo.
FOSA works on 2 harvesting fronts, that is, 2 groups of 6 to 7 harvesters with their corresponding forwarders and maintenance crew. We asked him why harvesting is mechanized. “It is safer and allows working in any climate”, explains José Paulo.

FOSA trabaja con 2 frentes de cosecha, esto es, 2 grupos de 6 a 7 harvesters con sus correspondientes forwarders y equipo de mantenimiento. Le preguntamos por qué se cosecha en forma mecanizada. “Es más seguro y permite trabajar en cualquier clima”, explica José Paulo.

Even though 95% of FOSA's harvesting is mechanized, a small percentage of the forests are harvested by contractors using a semi-mechanized method.  “These are areas with trees that are not as big, which imply less risks to the people”, states José Paulo.
Si bien el 95% de la cosecha en FOSA se hace en forma mecanizada, un pequeño porcentaje de los montes se cosecha con un método semi-mecanizado, por contratistas. “Se trata de áreas con árboles que no son tan grandes e implican menos riesgos para las personas”, dice José Paulo.
In these cases, the workers cut down the tree with chainsaws and a crane takes them to a stripping machine that debarks the trunks. These are then cut with a chainsaw and the crane carries them to the road.
En estos casos, los operarios cortan el árbol con motosierra y un grapo los lleva a una máquina peladora, que descorteza los troncos. Luego éstos se trozan con motosierra y el grapo los saca al camino.
The contractors comply with all FOSA’s requirements. The chainsaw operators must take courses and wear appropriate equipment.

Los contratistas cumplen todas las exigencias de FOSA. Los operadores de motosierras tienen que hacer cursos y llevar los equipos adecuados.

In any event, mechanized harvesting with harvesters is by far predominant. Forest growth average in Uruguay is 18m3 a year, but in FOSA it is 33 m3 a year, and the aim is to reach 40-42 in the near future.
De todas formas, la cosecha mecanizada, con harvesters, es la predominante por amplio margen. El promedio de crecimiento de los montes de Uruguay es 18 m3/año, pero en Fosa es 33 m3/año, con la meta de llegar a 40-42 próximamente.

FOSA has planted 3,500 hectares this year, but the aim is to add 10,000 hectares of new forests. “We are planning to sow 6,500 this spring”, states Urtempertinger.

FOSA lleva plantadas 3.500 hectáreas este año, pero la meta es agregar 10.000 hectáreas de monte nuevo. “Planificamos sembrar 6.500 esta primavera”, dice Urtempertinger.

Planting is carried out by contractors, who receive the seedlings from the nursery. The entire plantation is recorded on maps, by computer. The company’s aim is to have one plantation contractor per district, even though two are working on the larger ones.

La plantación la hacen contratistas que reciben los plantines del vivero. Toda la plantación se registra en mapas, en computadora. La empresa apunta a tener un contratista de plantación por distrito, aunque en los más grandes trabajan dos.
When a salary increase is granted in FOSA, the same is required for the contractors. Therefore it will be necessary to adjust the contract amount, so they can pay well and still be viable. In July, there was a 5.5% increase.

Cuando se da un aumento de sueldos en FOSA, se exige lo mismo a los contratistas. Para eso, hay que ajustar las tarifas del contrato, para que paguen bien y sean viables. En julio hubo un aumento de 5,5%.
There are contractors who employ up to 140 persons. In total, there are around 600 persons involved in the plantation, carrying out tasks such as sowing, fertilizing, applying herbicide, controlling ants, etc.

Hay contratistas que emplean hasta 140 personas. En total hay unas 600 personas involucradas en la plantación, en tareas de siembra, fertilización, aplicación de herbicida, control de hormigas, etc.
Inasmuch as new improved genetic material emerges from the nursery, FOSA replants harvested forests, placing new trees in between the lines of stumps. Before they have been planted a year, the lines of Eucalyptus close their crowns (they touch one another and shade the entire ground) and the forest is established. The harvest will take place between 8 and 10 years later.
En la medida que del vivero surge material genético mejorado, FOSA replanta los montes cosechados, colocando nuevos árboles entre las hileras de tocones. Antes del año de plantados, las líneas de Eucaliptus cierran las copas (toman contacto entre ellas y sombrean todo el suelo) y el monte está establecido. La cosecha será entre 8 y 10 años después.
