Sound Samples
On this page you'll find my collection of
sound samples and short bursts of creativity (and they are short!). Nothing
is particularly well done, but they are all fun little recording projects
that highlight particular pieces of equipment. My recording technology
is pretty rudimentary: unless otherwise noted, I simply run unbalanced cables
from a preamp or other audio device (like a PA) straight into the sound card
of either my Dell Inspiron 10000 notebook or
my Athlon 64-based desktop PC. I use Sony's
Acid 5.0 to record and mix the sounds.

This clip features a bunch of Carvin equipment.
Both guitars were recorded using the direct out of a Carvin Quad-X preamp; the effects unit is a Carvin XP4. The rhythm track (Channel 2 on the
X) uses the bridge pickup (a C22T) in a Carvin
AE185-12. The lead tracks use my Carvin
Bolt Plus. The first part of the lead is a M22SD bridge pickup with
the tone rolled back through Channel 3 of the X, and the last few seconds
are that same pickup on Channel 4 with the tone knob dimed.
Afterward, some friends from the Carvin Museum BBS fixed it up
with a little bass (done by Sir Freak) and drums (recorded by Chunga): http://www.personal.kent.edu/~tagray/GraytasTune.mp3

This is a collaboration done with Sir Freak
from the Carvin Museum BBS. He recorded
the drums, keys and bass. I added three guitar tracks. The "chunka, chunka" track
is done with the Plus using the Quad-X (Channel 4) with a good bit of flange.
The other rhythm part uses the same combo, minus the flange. The
lead parts used Channel 3 of the X and a Valley Arts California Pro guitar
(bridge position, DiMarzio DP100).

This one is pretty simple: an AE185-12 tuned to an open G and Channel
1 of my Tech 21 SansAmp TRI-A.C. preamp straight
into the 'puter. No effects, no mutliple tracks and no EQ.

This track was done to demonstrate the universal capabilities of the
TRI-A.C.. I used my Carvin B4 bass (with the hipshot engaged so the E
is tuned down to D) and Channel 1 of the TRI-A.C.

This track (yep, I'm butchering Rush!) shows off my Heritage 535
and the Tri-A.C. This is just the guitar and preamp, straight into
the sound card.
http://www.personal.kent.edu/~tagray/PlusTest.mp3. Another Tri-A.C. demo, this time
using my Carvin Bolt Plus.
http://www.personal.kent.edu/~tagray/epitest.mp3. Here's a clip featuring an Epiphone
Valve Jr. 5 Watt head. I used the Epi, a 2x12 cabinet and a Crybaby
Wah. It was recorded with a cheap Nady microphone.
http://www.personal.kent.edu/~tagray/Zinky48.mp3. This is a clip of a Zinky Blue
Velvet 25 watt tube combo amp. I used the Plus and the Zinky, mic'ing
the 1x12 five inches away and slightly off center.
