LMS Systems 6-29-05
Use of LISTSERV.KENT.EDU for LMS lists.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6-9-05
Folks,
You all know by now that, as part of federated services, we're getting out of the listserv business in LMS.
Here are the next steps that we're doing and what we're asking you to do:
1. From now on, we will make no new lists on the LMS listserv.
2. Instead, we will direct you to make your own lists on the university listserv.
This page: http://helpdesk.kent.edu/faq/Listserv/
has a "Create a new list request form" as well as user's guides.
3. We urge you to begin all list names with "LMS-" so that they are easier for everyone to find and keep track of.
All federated services like Active Directory, file and print, and HelpDesk, are maintaining this unit-level type of distinction.
So, we strongly urge listnames like this: LMS-facstaff@listserv.kent.edu, LMS-rm370@listserv.kent.edu, LMS-pidesk@listerv.kent.edu.
4. We urge you to keep your list names as short as possible.
5. We urge you to set up two list administrators for every list. It's probably best that these two admins are close colleagues.
If you have no other such close colleague at work who's willing to be your backup administrator,
you can make Jim Godfrey your second list administrator. But please only do this if you must. The systems staff really has to get
out of the list business.
6. Starting now, Jim Godfrey will be working one-on-one with current administrators of LMS lists to help you migrate to the university listserv. This process will also provide us a chance to delete lots of outdated unused lists.
7. If we see the need, we may provide some group training sessions on the university listserv. I'm sure you'll let us know.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks
TK

----------------------------------------------------------------
Send the following line in a mail message to listserv@listserv.kent.edu

where "xxxxxxx" is the password you want to use. You should get a confirmation back from listserv
that the password is established. If you already own a list, the password is the
same for all the lists your own. You will not need to setup a new one.
How to Add a New Subscriber:

How do your subscribers sign on to your list:
---------------------------------------------
Send the following command in a message to listserv@listserv.kent.edu
sub LMS-systems firstname lastname
How to setup a Welcome message for new subscribers (Optional):
--------------------------------------------------------------
There is a default message that listserv uses to send to new subscribers. If you want to have a
customized welcome message, send the file in a mail message to me: jtboehm@kent.edu and I'll install it.
From then on, you can update the file any time by including the new version in a mail message
to listserv@listserv.kent.edu with the following line at the top:
PUT LMS-systems.WELCOME PW=xxxxxxxx
The Web interface to manage your list:
--------------------------------------
You can use this link to manage your list on the web after you have setup a personal password in the first step.
http://listserv.kent.edu/scripts/wa.exe?LMGT1=LMS-systems
The list archives on the web:
-----------------------------
If you chose to have your list archives available on the web, the link to your list
(after you have submitted some messages to the list) is:
http://listserv.kent.edu/archives/LMS-systems.html
Other Useful Information:
------------------------
You can subscribe to a list for all Kent List Owners: KSUOWN-L by sending the following
command to listserv@listserv.kent.edu:
Sub ksuown-L Yourfirst name Yourlastname
This list is intended for list owners to discuss ideas, ask questions
and get answers or tips for list owning.
There are a lot of other information files you can get from LISTSERV.
If you can use WWW then you can point your browser to:
http://act.kent.edu/listreq
and read the list owner's guide and manuals online.
Or you can issue the command in a mail message to listserv@listserv.kent.edu:
INFO
And you will see all the files that are available to you. If you
find one you need, use the uppercased keyword in an INFO command like
"INFO keyword". I would suggest the following to start:
INFO GEN (for general information)
INFO REF (for LISTSERV commands)
INFO KEY (for LIST header keywords)
INFO OWN (for LIST OWNER commands)
You can put as many "INFO" commands as you like in the same
mail message to listserv@listserv.kent.edu. You can do the same
with multiple "add" and "delete" in the same message.
Enjoy your new list, and if you have any question, please feel free
to send me a message jtboehm@kent.edu or call me (x21317).
