LITA SSS-IG Annual 1999

At the ALA LITA Secure Systems and Services Interest Group (SSS-IG) meeting in New Orleans, on June 28, 1999, four informal presentations were given at a session entitled:

Authentication Update: Short Reports from the Field.

  1. Remote Patron Authentication: the low-tech, free approach.
Monica King, Ouachita Parish Public Library, Monroe, Louisiana, described a Perl cgi-script that authenticates users via their library patron barcode and sends a web page with instructions for remote access to the user's browser.

  2. "Just Good Enough" Security.
Dan Lester, of Boise State University, described how he authenticates off-campus users against their OPAC patron database and conceals the redirection of the user to the vendor's site, thus avoiding the hassles of a proxy server.

  3. Certificate-based Access Management of Web Resources, or, Welcome to the Bleeding Edge.
Ariel Glenn, Columbia University, described several CGI-based and certificate-based projects at Columbia.
    Here's Ariel's Presentation

  4. Beltrao Baptista of Obvia Corporation described his company's Remote Database Access (RDA) Service.
