Academic Year 2005-2006
The 2005-2006 academic year was very good for the Kent State University Gospel Choir.
We were invited to send an audition tape to join in
the College Gospel Choir Explosion, sponsored by the Louisville Urban League.
We were chosen to
compete on March 4, 2006 with the University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, Kentucky
State University, University of Western Kentucky, and University of Cincinnati.
Our students had an opportunity to interact with more than 400 college students
from these choirs. They ate together, sang together, and prayed together for
hours leading to this event. So, it did not feel like a competition at all.
First place prize was $5000; 2nd place was $2500, 3rd place $1000. Each choir
received $500 for participating. How excited we were to win 2nd place. So, we
crossed the Kentucky State lines with $3000.00! The group will perform their
competition piece at the May concert!
The spring concert was dedicated to President Carol Cartwright on the occasion
of her retirement from Kent State.
Former choir members from 1997 through last semester, were invited to join the
choir in singing the popular song "Total Praise," by Richard Smallwood,
which was the concert finale.
Chicago Tour -- October 2006
The choir was invited to perform in Chicago in October. The group toured
the city and performed at churches and universities. Watch for a trip
report with photos to appear here soon.
Fall Concert -- December 8, 2006
The Fall concert will be held in the Carol A. Cartwright Auditorium,
(formerly University Auditorium) on Friday December 8, 2006, at 7:30 PM.
Disney Gospel ChoirFest
The choir has been invited to perform at the Disney Gospel ChoirFest in
September, 2007 in Orlando. This festival is in conjunction with the Tom
Joyner Family Reunion. The Tom Joyner Show is a nationally syndicated
radio broadcast (local 93.1 FM).
