Downloading the Lectures

While the lectures for this course are on the web, you will probably want to download the lectures and make your own CD.  I strongly encourage you to do so.

Warnings

1.    This like allows you to download and burn your own copy of the current version of the Macroeconomics Lectures CD.  If you want to save the file on your CD, you first must burn the CD to get something usable.

2.      Do not try this if your computer does not have a Roxio CD burner.  All this program will do is let you burn the CD.  You cannot read the file.

3.      Do not try this over a telephone line.  I estimate download time as 100 hours over a modem.

4.      This procedure works in the College of Business Labs.  It may or may not work on a computer at home, or one at work.

Instructions

You are now going to be asked a series of questions.  Click on the appropriate answer.

Where are you working?  A Computer in the College of Business Lab.  A Computer that is hard wired.    A computer with a dial-up telephone connection

Not all computers have a CD burner.  I have seen people waste a lot of time because they did not verify that their computer had a CD burner.  If you are not sure there is a CD burner, ask for help.  Have you verified it has a Roxio CD burner?  Yes   No

Excellent!  Now read the paragraphs in red before doing anything.

In a moment, you will be asked to click on a link.  Once you do, you will be asked if you want to Open or Save a file.  Save it!

If you have your computer properly set up, you will be asked if the file is virus free.  To the best of my belief and knowledge, it is.

Pick a name such as “economics.iso” for the file name.  The file type “iso” is important.

One you click on the link, go get a cup of coffee.  I estimate 30 minutes for the download.  Some people report shorter times, and some have reported up to an hour.  It depends on your computer, your internet link and how many others are attempting this download at the same time.  Wait until you have finished this step to read the rest of the instructions.

Once the file is downloaded, you are almost done.  Do not attempt to copy this file to a CD.  It will not work (among other reasons it is too large).

The links are below in green.  Make sure you click on the link for the course you want and the semester you want.

Remember: these are large files, do not attempt this over a phone line!

Good.  You are ready to begin.  Does your CD have a Roxio CD burner?  Yes No Unsure

Click –or double click-on the file.  This will initiate your CD burner

You are on your own

Frequently Asked Questions

The file is too big for a CD.  No, it isn’t.  This is a self-executing program.  Once you download it, and double-click it, the program will automatically invoke the CD creator and then download the relevant information on a CD.  It does fit.

The procedure does not work.  It does.  I test it.  Try this in the College of Business computer lab, and get some help from the support staff.

There is no link for the course I am interested in.  I keep links up for the courses I am currently teaching.  This means I am not teaching the course this semester.

I am taking your course next semester; the link is dated for this semester.  Can I use that link?  Probably not.  I am constantly making changes – sometimes significant changes – in these lectures.  If you want to download and get a head start, go ahead.  But be prepared to download it again when I post the link.  For a spring course, I post after finals in the fall semester; for a fall course, I post after finals in the spring semester.

A friend gave me a CD from a previous semester.  Can I use that?  Probably not, for I keep revising these notes.  It doesn’t take much work to bury a CD.  Would you rather spend $100 on a textbook?

When I download the file and attempt to copy it to a CD, I get a message saying the file is too large.  Go back and read the instructions.  Don’t copy the file.  Double Click it to start the CD writer program on your PC.

Can these files work on a Mac?  Not without some modification.  I am looking for someone to work with me to produce a Mac version.

Once I have downloaded the file, can I produce multiple copies for my friends?  Yes.  And it will save a lot of time if you do it that way.

My Computer does not have a CD burner. What do I do? Use one of the computers in the College of Business Lab that does have a CD burner.

My Computer does not have a high speed internet connection. What do I do? Use one of the computers in the College of Business Lab that does have a CD burner.

I use Road Runner.  Is that good enough to download and burn a CD?  Yes; it will take a little longer, but it can be done.  If you are successful using something besides Roxio or Sonic, let me know.  I like to keep a list of programs that work.

.

Do we really need to do this or can we rely on the version on the web?  It’s your choice, but I think you are making a big mistake if you don’t take the time to burn a CD.

Will you modify this list over time? Yes, write me your questions and suggestions for other questions.  I answer all, and if they are frequently asked, the list gets modified.

Some miscellaneous instructions

These steps should still work, but you are probably better off doing this at the College of Business, where there are people to help you.  If you want to continue anyway, click here.

Verify that it has a CD burner and then start over.  If there is no CD burner you are about to waste some time, so I suggest you ask for help to verify that there is a CD burner.

Start over.

It is not going to work without a CD burner, so move to another machine.

This is not smart. Start over.
