Homework 2: From the Ashes of Disaster 1. What linux distro would you set up for Dan? There are many different distrobutions to choose from. however, many of them have many similarities: kernel, drivers, etc.. I would pick RedHat hat for a couple reasons. I have seen RedHat through many versions now, and have been very impressed with how it matured. Since this is for buisness, RedHat is a good selection due to its many partnerships the company has made such as 3com, HP, and Adaptec. Also, if you are going to purchase the machine to put it on, RedHat is the choice for many companies who will preinstall the os for you. There are other good reasons: 1. Many apps have been built on and tested on RH. 2. RH has really made it a point to try and include as many device drivers as possible. 3. The purchase of RH will entitle you to free 30 day support. 4. Wide user base. 5. Well documented books and website. 6. They throw one hell of a party at Linux Expo. :-) 2. Install a mini-dristro. - downloaded loaf from http://loaf.ecks.org/ - Grabbed the 3c509 image for my nic. - Used rawrite off of a RH cd and issued this command: F:\DOSUTILS>rawrite C:\windows\desktop\loadf2.img a: - Booted my machine up with no problem. - Since at home couldn't config net on it since there is no pppd on it (big surpise)
