Class Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays / 5:20-6:35 PM Course Objectives: This overview course will provide an introduction to Information Technologies, career paths and professional certifications available. This course covers basic through advanced computer concepts with an emphasis on both the personal computer and enterprise computing. Topics include hardware, application and system software, the Internet and World Wide Web, communications, e-commerce, societal issues, database management, systems analysis and design, programming, information systems, career opportunities, certifications in the computer field, and computer trends. Prerequisite: None. Texts Required: Discovering Computers 2006: A Gateway to Information, Complete Edition by Shelly, Cashman and Vermaat (ISBN: 0-619-25546-3) Textbook Web Site: www.scsite.com/dc2006 Class Code for Site: Contact Instructor Supplemental Materials Required: Two or more 3˝" HD Diskettes and/or CD-RWs which are in a protective case clearly labeled with student's name . Course Requirements: Students are expected to attend class regularly, be on time, and have all assignment prepared prior to class. You are encouraged to read materials ahead in order to get the most out of class discussion and lab work. Attendance Policy: Regular class attendance is necessary to gain the full benefit of the course. Students are expected to attend class regularly and be on time for each class. A record will be kept. An excessive number of absences will be reflected in your final grade. Classroom Policy:
Grading Policy: No assignments will be accepted more than two weeks late. Three announced online examinations and four unannounced quizzes will be given. No make-up exams will be allowed without prior arrangements being made. Make-up exams must be taken when scheduled. No unannounced quiz make-ups are allowed. Quizzes are usually given at the beginning of a lecture. Students who arrive late will not be permitted to take an unannounced quiz. Make sure your name and exercise numbers appear in the upper-left corner. If an exercise has multiple sheets, then staple them together. Do not staple different assignments together. Disorganized assignments (pages out of order, mislabeled, unreadable, etc.) will receive zero points. If your assignment is multiple sheets, sequence it according to the order of the exercise.
Grading Scale:
Test Make-up Policy: Three online examinations will be given. No make-up exams will be allowed without prior arrangements being made. Make-up exams must be taken when scheduled. To prepare for examinations, attend lecture and read the chapters. At least 90% of the questions are taken directly from the reading material. Review the Chapter Review and Key Terms sections at the end of the chapters on which you are being tested. If you are absent or late, you are responsible for getting the course notes, handouts, and laboratory assignments you missed.
