Protocol Analyzer Exercise:

1. Go to http://www.ethereal.com.
2. Go to Ethereal’s download page and download the Window’s version Ethereal.
3. In your Virtual PC environment, install Ethereal on you Window’s XP OS.
4. Run Ethernet packet sniffer.
5. From a Command Shell, ping www.kent.edu or your neighbor’s IP address.
6. Filter for ICMP packets.
7. Top section is the Packet List pane, the middle section is the Tree View pane, and the bottom section is the Data View pane. Look at the Tree View pane and examine the IP addresses and MAC addresses involved in the ping activity.
8. Print screen your ethereal session, put your name on the paper, and turn into instructor.
