Each student will answer six identifications from a list of twelve that will be chosen from those listed below.  The twelve will be chosen by the instructor.  Be sure to think about the questions who, what, when, why, where and the significance as you formulate your answers.

Essays (35 points each)

Each student will answer two out of four long essay questions that will be chosen by the instructor from the list below.  Be sure to answer in detail, remembering to give examples, define terms and illustrate as needed.  Think about answering the question as if you are telling someone who has never had any world history at all.

 

  1. Historians have long used the term the Dark Ages to describe the period from about 500-800 AD.  Some have moved away from that title more recently saying that it is really not accurate in describing that period of history.  Do you agree or disagree and why?  Be sure to talk about what it means and then give specific examples from the period to support whichever view you take.
  2. Historians have argued over the question of what happened to Rome—did it fall or not?  How do you answer this question based on our class discussions and your text book reading?  Be sure to take a stand and then support it with specific facts and examples.
  3. Explain the structure of feudalism and what kinds of duties and responsibilities went with the main titles.
  4. Explain why the Aztecs or Incas were able to be defeated by the conquistadores.  What happened in their encounters?
  5. Explain what your life would have been like if you had lived during the Middle Ages.  In order to answer this you will need to explain who you are and what position you hold in society.
  6. Explain the rise of the Byzantine Empire and how it differed from Western Rome.  What were the key similarities?
  7. Explain the Five Pillars of Islam.  Do not just list them but actually explain them and why they are important.
  8. Some people claim that history is nothing but a bunch of names and dates.  After finishing this class-do you agree or disagree?  Choose three specific examples from the semester to support whatever side you take.
