Take home final Exam

Spring 1999

 

All exams are due on Monday, May 10th at 2 p.m. No late exams will be accepted. Exams can be typed or handwritten as students prefer. Please be sure to include footnotes as needed to document materials. Students should rely most heavily on materials from class-handouts, texts, notes, discussions; particularly for the essay questions. Identifications should include looking at short biographical sketches done because some of them may be helpful.

Identifications (5 points each)

Students will answer six of the following. Remember to think about the questions who, what, when, why, where and the significance.

Essays (30 points)

Students will answer one essay question from the following list. Be sure to answer in detail, give examples and support. Define terms if needed.

1. Explain the events surrounding the Opium Wars. Why are the wars so significant in Chinese history?

  1. What were the goals of the Taiping? How successful were they in achieving their goals?
  2. How was the West involved in the Boxer Rebellion? Why? Did their involvement in China increase or decline as a result of these events?

Essays (30 points)

Students will answer one essay question from the following list. Be sure to answer in detail, give examples and support. Define terms if needed.

  1. Explain the main thoughts/ideas of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. What role did he play in the 1911 Revolution?
  2. Discuss the rise of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). When? Why? The role of Mao?
  3. How did the Nationalists differ in their ideas for China from the CCP? What did Chiang Kai-shek hope to accomplish?

Short Essay (10 points)

Everyone must answer the following question using the text Bound Feet and Western Dress as supporting material.

1. Explain why the practice of footbinding began in China. Have the attitudes changed in recent history? How do Chinese living outside of China view this practice?
