This exam is due March 10th with no late exams being accepted. Exams may be typed or handwritten as the student chooses. Students must answer questions in all sections of the exam and all work that is turned in must be the student's own. If notes, books etc.. are used to supply necessary information credit must be given as needed. If credit is not given the student will fail the exam.

Essays (25 points each)

Each student will answer three of the following questions in detail. Be sure to define terms, give examples and illustrations as necessary to support your ideas. Again be sure to give proper credit if needed.

  1. Discuss the major characteristics of the first three dynasties. What were their key contributions to China's development?
  2. Explain the major ideas of Confucianism or Daoism. Why did these ideas develop at the time they did?
  3. Why is the Han Dynasty considered to be one of China's greatest dynasties? What made it so special or important to China's development?
  4. Explain the growth of Buddhism in China and how it affected China's development. Why did Buddhist teachings find such an audience in China during the Buddhist Age of 500-850 ?
  5. Discuss the importance of the Tang Dynasty in China's history. What were some of the key changes and contributions to China from this dynasty?
  6. Family is considered to be at the center of China's structure-why? How did this idea develop and what does it mean to China's political growth in the early dynasties (through the Song dynasty)
