Honors History

Spring 1999

Each student will prepare two essays to be handed in on March 11th. No late exams will be accepted. When students turn in their essays they will then be given a series of short identifications to answer in class. Essay questions can be typed or handwritten depending on the student's preference. The only resources students are expected to use are class notes and class texts. Quotations need to be properly cited if this done. Failure to do so will result in a failing grade.

Essays (30 points each)

Each student will answer two of the following questions in detail. Be sure to give specific examples and define terms as needed.

  1. Why were there so many plans for reconstruction? Which plan actually was used and why?
  2. Discuss the role of political bosses during the Industrial Revolution. How did the increases in immigration contribute to the rise?
  3. Why did American's move west? What was life like once they arrived and were there differences based on class, gender or race?
  4. Many changes took place during the Industrial Revolution. Explain what you consider to be the three most important changes. Why?
  5. Discuss the basic goals of the Populists. Were they successful-why or why not?
  6. Discuss the main contributions of two of the following:

Ulysses S. Grant John D. Rockefeller Andrew Johnson

Rutherford B. Hayes Chester Arthur Jane Addams

Short Essay (10 points)

Everyone must answer this question in detail.

1. Now that you have read extensively in your particular American History text-what approach does your text use and how well is it supported? In other words is your text mostly political, social, cultural, intellectual etc..? Does it focus more on the great people or the common person? Does it include discussion based on issues of gender, class and race? Be sure to give specific examples of coverage.
