Students will turn in their exam on March 10th and No Late Exams are accepted!! Exams can be typed or handwritten as the student chooses. Be sure that questions are answered in all sections of the test. Questions should be answered in detail and be the student's own work. If sources are used proper credit must be given as necessary. If proper credit is not given a student will fail the exam.

Each student will answer five of the following. Be sure to think about who, what, when, why, where and the significance.

Essays (25 points each)

Each student will answer three of the following questions in detail. Be sure to give examples, define terms and give proper credit.

  1. The Puritans had a particular view of recreation and sport that reflected their theology and world view. Explain their basic views. What were some of the ambiguities in their ideas and how did they try to overcome that. Be sure to give specific examples.
  2. Gender played a role in the early development of sport. Discuss the problems associated with gender and the restrictions placed upon women regarding sporting activities. How did they try to get around some of those restrictions?
  3. Explain the basic characteristics of modern sport and what they mean. Which sport or sports would you consider to be the first modern sports and why? This means talking about why others are not considered modern sport.
  4. What changes in America by the first half of the nineteenth century contributed to changes in America's sporting practices? What are some of the key changes that resulted in sport?
  5. As sports developed class and ethnicity played a role in determining who would be involved in particular sports. Why? Give examples of sports that became associated with specific groups in the nineteenth century.
  6. The Industrial Revolution profoundly changed American life in many ways. How did the Industrial Revolution contribute to changes in American sport and what are some of those changes? Are there differences from changes that began in the first half of the century or are they simply continuations of earlier changes?
