All students will answer the following questions and turn in their exams on Wednesday, October 20th. No late exams will be accepted. Exams can be typed, handwritten or turned in on disk-whatever students prefer. Be sure the work you hand in is your own. Answer three of the following in detail. Be sure to give examples and define terms as needed.

  1. Discuss the role of women in the colonial South. How did their presence or lack there-of during the 1600s effect the development and growth of the southern colonies?
  2. Explain the circumstances surrounding Anne Hutchinson's problems with the Puritan church. How did her situation illustrate any larger issues or problems?
  3. Explain the term Republican motherhood. When did it develop, why and what changed as a result of the idea?
  4. The Salem witchcraft Trials and Great Awakening were two key events of the late 1600s-early1700s. Why are these events significant in the study of women's history or why are they not?
  5. How did the new constitution affect the position/role of women in America? Did it introduce any changes in the laws or just in attitudes and beliefs?
  6. Discuss the main theme of Deborah Gray White's book. How does she support her beliefs and is she successful?
